Slikour.com Music: Griffy feat Selwyn,Kay E and Kayla

Press Play: GRIFFY GRIFF FEAT MR SELWYN, KAY E & KEYLA – IN THIS WORLD

So Griff shared with me his story of how this song was composed and brace yourself cause its a bit long. It goes something like this.

Well its late December 2012 i had booked a studio session with Kay E to work on a few tracks for my third tape Young black and Hungry Volume 2. We get to the studio with Mr Selwyn and i start playing random instrumentals for Kay E and we come across 1 from DJ Hitec (In This World) and Selwyn starts freestyling over it, we also had a vocalist Kyla in studio who is vocalist and he starts mumbling the hook.
We didnt decide on a concept initally, we just freestyled over the beat for a few minutes, then Selwyn went into the booth, his verse painted a vivid picture of what goes through the mind of a person who sees no other option but to resort to crime so that he can survive the game of life. I dont think i have to explain to anyone how ill Selwyn is and in this track he brings his killer flow and delivary with some very relevant content.
Kyla had the hook done : I`m in the game tryna find my self… and with that said, the tone of the song was set.
Kay E was next, speaking on the repercussions of crime and on how he doesnt want the next man to go to prison for being a typical thug and chosing not to live on n the straight and narrow. He gives a very vivid explanation of what happens to most criminals i the ghetto (you either go to Prison of you get killed) and uses his witt to use him as an example of some one the community can be proud of “… CALL ME THE GHETTO CALCULATOR… THEY CAN COUNT ON ME…”
Then it was my turn, Selwyn, Kyla and Kay E had KILLED this song so far with being real, so i saw it better to do the same, so i used my very own life, making reffrerence to what i normally going through : having our family on your back (financially) when they need you by having a stable job even though you could be out making music as the beginning to my verse. I also touch on current affairs like politics and how unfair and demotivating life ‘In this world’ can be, especially when youre YOUNG BLACK AND HUNGRY.

This song feels like it was written for me, you got to play it till the end the only difference between a winner and a loser is that a winner plays it till the end. Dont be eager to roll with crowds stay in your lane/pass the knowledge on to your team but carry the flame/ cause its yours and yours alone to brighten your way/

Slikour.com Review: Tyga Careless World Rise of the Last King

Press Play: Let It Show (feat. J Cole)

Press Play: Celebration (feat. T-Pain)

Under the Young Money stable we’ve seen Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj have phenomenal commercial success.

Next up on the roster or rather next under pressure to achieve the commercial feats of Young Money is Tyga with Careless World-Rise of the Last King.
I’ve been listening to Tyga since his mixtape days and I remember putting my money on him over Drake, before he blew up.
Well clearly that was a miscalculation and one of the arguments from my peers back then was, what is Tyga talking about?
Listening to the album that question resonates.
On this album Tyga spits hard like all his other mixtapes but his content is everywhere.
The need to create superstar hit comes across on many occasions with typical Wayne formulas on tracks like Muthafucka Up featuring Nicki Minaj,Faded featuring Lil Wayne and a typical Lil Wayne move of featuring Robin Thicke  on This Is Like, the  formula inspiration wouldn’t be complete without the Drake suited I’m Gone featuring Big Sean and Rack City.
Not to say these songs are bad, its just nothing new and it makes it difficult to establish what Tyga is about.
He really stands out when he does himself on tracks like Black Crowns, the radio friendly celebration with T-Pain, King and Queens with Nas and Wale and the soulful Let it Show featuring J-Cole.
One real positive is that the featured artists really come through J-Cole,Nas,Lil Wayne and Wale really bring it.
The album is a great listen and probably would of had more impact if it was shorter and more defining, 21 tracks is too much if you dont have the content.
I’ve posted two of my favourite songs from the album above

Slikour.Com Rewind: Snow Informer

Oh my gosh Snow was so cool when we were in primary school or somewhere. This dude was produced by a pioneering rapper called MC Shan who made so much money of this track that he just quit rapping.  Well you know I just want to take you back in time. Laugh enjoy and if you arent old enough well take heed

Slikour.com Music:Complex Macaroni and Spaghetti

Press Play: Macaroni & Spaghetti

Story Behind The Track- Its a track about how Thibe and farai are different, thibe representing  more of macaroni and Farai being the other side of  sphagetti, we are different and the same at the same time!but yet we can both fuse our talents and promise our believers we gonna represent! The meaning of the lingo ( Macaroni& Sphagetti)  means all good. This is a banger the beat is probably stolen though but who cares we ride with it.

Slikour.com Movies: Material

Got to check out Material last week and already in the back of my mind I never expected to ball out laughing, because although Riaad Moosa is probably one of the funniest comedians in the game right now, the movie game is a whole different animal. So without expectations I watched this movie and with all honesty I can count on one hand how many local movies can evoke such emotion. What makes a movie good is when you figure out how it will end but you stay glued because the characters manage the story so well. Its a light hearted eye opener of typical Muslim Indians commitment to culture, religion, family and history. In the movie Riaad is embracing all those things but his challenge is following a dream that his family beleive compromises all those values. It’s sounds all serious but thats the core of the movie which is carried through in a non forceful comical manner.  Special mention to Joey Rasdien with his chirps and his yellow beetle. I can’t compare this to any Bollywood movie cause I haven’t watched none, but in comparison to most local and international movies that I watch this is definitely one to check out.

Slikour.com:AKA: 2011 and Beyond

Its been a while and im inspired to write, my new years resolutions normally take time to process so my inspiration is a bit delayed. I took sometime to look at the hip hop year in 2011, and I must say the game changed in a major way, well atleast the cats that were in the forefront were replaced by a whole new generation of artists. If you dont know about them by now you must be living in the same planet this blog has been over the past few months they call it Nowhere. The game last year was held ransom by AKA,L-Tido,Kwesta, Cashtime Fam and let say Khuli Chana depending on whether you want to call him new school or not. I’ll be doing weekly big ups of each of them sharing and giving my opinion on their history, albums and what I think. Its all my opinion feel free to drop yours and your thoughts on the local rap game in 2011 and Beyond

When the schoolboy puts down the schoolbag to pick up the new swag in persuit of being a beast and a problem a couple of awards later you realize his probably on the path to achieving his goal. AKA rapping days date back to high school at St Johns with his then crew Entity. Then they were sidelined not only because the focus was on the Motswako movement -a hip hop style introduced by rappers from Mafikeng then lead by HHP,Tuks, and Morafe- but also because one of the members was the son of the then CEO of SABC Dali Mpofu so their street cred was questionable based  on the assumption that they were rich boys that got preferential treatment. They also never helped avoiding that perception with their videos that had speed-boats, yachts and yellow bones, all the things that were unheard off even by the most commercially successful acts in South African hip hop at that time.

The groups first album was their last album and with the boys leaving high school hip hop was put on the back burner but AKA then still known as Keenan decided otherwise. I guess when you’ve been kicked around and your credibility has been questioned you either go home crying or you come back with more attitude, charisma, swagger and ofcourse music that we’ll ensure your career doesn’t dejavu. AKA’s chose the latter-Picture the dude who lost a fist fight and ran home to get his fathers gun to solve matters- Teaming up with his new crew IV League he took the full time duty of being the rapper and they dropped his first single “DO IT” which became an instant hit on YFM and 5fm, this opened up doors to collaborate with artists like Pro-Kid and Khuli Chana which gave birth to the hit club banger “I Want It All” AKA’s popularity and fan-base was definately growing but what sealed the deal were those bell and heavy synths of what I’d like to see as AKA prophesizing his future in what he called the Victory Lap.

With the track been number one on the MetroFM charts for 5 weeks, and on the playlist of every trending hip hop club dj and within a few months of the release of his album AKA was  nominated and won at the Channel O awards for the most gifted hip hop video all over Africa and if that wasn’t enough he then dominates the Metro FM awards for best hip hop and best produced album and on top of that beating South African IT girl Zahara in best newcomer award. In 2011 AKA opened a bakery which only serves humble pie to all the non-believers. With so much achieved in so little time as a solo artists AKA is on the path to leading a new generation of rappers who rap hard but don’t essentially have the ghetto hardships linked to most successful rappers. It’s groundbreaking and he has all the qualities to fill it as long as he stays consistent.

Slikour.com Video: 50Cents feat.Tony Yayo – I Just Wanna

So your recording company pisses you off, you say fuck em and delay your album’s release date while creating more buzz for your music. Thats the rational 50 seems to be applying after Interscope pissed him off again. He has been complaining about how they not on the same page as he is and until they all get there he aint releasing nothing. This one is from his Big 10 mixtape I think i like this track. What are your thoughts.

Slikour.com Video: Common Freestyle

Its rare to hear rappers freestyle nowadays so it was a quite exciting hearing Common busting some lines of the head.

Slikour.com video: Lil Wayne brings out Drake@ The Dome

Everything this weekend was about the concerts Drake concert was dope minus the little technical glitch. I missed Wayne cause I had booked myself out for a charitable cause in Magaliesburg, from what I hear it was stupid. How was your weekend did you go to any of the concert and what were your thoughts.

Slikour.com Music: Crooked I Feat. K Young- Diamond in the Back

Press Play: Crooked I Diamond In The Back

Crooked I is maybe one of the most overlooked artists in the West Coast with a history at Deathrow and now making his major comeback to the scene with Slaughterhouse. His definately paid his dues and this is one is from his EP In None We Trust, lyrically his one of the best in the west  with lines like “ironic a stand up nigga but still chairman”.
